All the talk of Jake Peavy coming to the Cubs — the excitement of Cubs fans — will appear to have had its door closed when folks read the paper today. But there’s still hope, as I see it.

I trust Jim Hendry. Even though I’ve spoken out against some of his methods, the man has built a foundation in a ballpark that has seen its team sink for 100 years. He’s shrewd.

Jake Peavy has not made it a secret that he wants to come to Chicago. There’s the Angels, close to Peavy’s home and they are a contender. But I think Hendry saw the Padres trying to squeeze too much out of this deal, and with a no-trade clause in his contract, Peavy — a guy the Padres HAVE to move — has the upper hand.

“Lots of rumors out there about the Cubs still getting Peavy even though they brought back Dempster. What are your thoughts? Also heard DeRosa might go to Phils as part of Peavy deal and/or a separate deal. Thoughts? I would hate to see DeRosa leave myself. Maybe you need a new post season rumors thread to get folks excited!”
