It's Holy Week, and once again we're treated to an "edifying" exposition on what Don Wooten does -- or doesn't -- believe with regard to Catholic doctrine.

I am not surprised by his list of heroes from those "heady," treasonous days of Vatican II, nor by his admiration of Garry Wills who, while he may be a linguist, is neither "an accomplished theologian," nor (is he kidding us?) a "devout Catholic" (Pat Buchanan spent more formative time with the Jesuits than Wills; are we to assume that Wooten would hang on Buchanan's every word?)

I was, however, amazed to "learn" that St. Augustine kept his denial of the Mass as a sacrifice so secret from the rest of the Church (for nearly 16 centuries!) that it was only brought to light through the efforts of the aforementioned "accomplished theologian," Wills, and Don the Doubter. Yet another of those secondary (tertiary?) and heavily editorialized sources of which Wooten is so fond.

Since it is obvious that there is no aspect of the Catholic religion that he agrees with or genuinely has affection for, why does he remain a Catholic? Are there no Episcopalian or Unitarian Churches in the area? No "‘progressive" congregations of any mainstream Protestant denominations? Or better yet, why doesn't he just start his own? How better to accommodate the doctrinal buffet for which his appetite is insatiable?

But, by next Holy Week, please find another church or institution to attack and undermine.

Christopher P. Browne,

Rock Island
