Judge John Donald O'Shea's March 22 column reads more like an obituary but he obscured the real issue about the courthouse.

Here are the facts:

-- The courthouse is in bad shape,

-- RICO is responsible for the poor maintenance

-- Old buildings can be remodeled and expanded to their former glory with numerous examples found in Rock Island itself!

What is getting lost in the lawsuits and building obituaries is the fact that there is no comprehensive plan to remodel/expand the building. I have seen no costs, no plans or how to pay for it.

What the county WANTS you to do is turn over carte blanche power to a commission to plan, organize and finance any county building project without citizen review or approval. So over the years we could see numerous NEW buildings built without taxpayer approval.

We don't need that expansion of power. The county board should hire professionals to create a complete plan with financing options for the taxpayers to vote on and NOT a small commission unanswerable to the citizens of this county.

Make our county board members WORK for their pay and vote NO in April for the building commission proposal.

Save the courthouse!
