I read in The Rock Island Argus about the Sled Dog Dorado who was asphyxiated after being covered by snow from blowing winds.

The dog was being cared for in a dog lot that had been set up while waiting to be flown back to Anchorage. That doesn't sound like it was cared for too well.

Buried in the snow sounds very cruel to me. Don't they have doghouses sitting around, or do these dogs have to lie in the snow and ice?

I have often wondered about these sled races and these poor dogs used in that sport. What is their choice? They have none, do they? They may love to run and play around in the snow, but what they are forced to do is something I would never allow for a dog of mine.

I am sure their feet are a mess, and their whole body is worn out. Then, if they are left without shelter, this is a pure hell of its own.

I am sure some will say, "Oh, the dogs love it." Maybe running keeps them from being buried in snow. This is a sport thought up by mankind. I wonder how kind it is. If the dogs could ride the sled and humans were doing the pulling, I might watch it.

I think these dogs need more compassion and places to get out of the deep snow and blowing winds, I am sure it proves deadly more than a person knows, it just doesn't make the news.

All the excuses in the world wouldn't make me feel that all is well. Just because it is an animal, a dog, doesn't mean it doesn't die from exposure to weather. Doesn't mean it doesn't suffer.

I can't believe that humans don't wake up to the cruelty they bring to animals. I don't care if it is the Iditarod, or what, it may be a so called sport, but use compassion.

Some push animals too far and then it is a form of animal abuse and cruelty. Nothing more.
