AP's Today in History

Today is Sunday, July 5, the 186th day of 2009. There are 179 days left in the year.

1859 -- 150 years ago: Capt. I. Huber has removed his beer hall to his new and splendid brick building, near his brewery. This is one of the neatest blocks in town, and his conveniences for selling beer are much finer now than before.

1884 -- 125 years ago: Police in Rock Island are investigating vandals' actions in Chippiannock Cemetery.

1909 -- 100 years ago: Hundreds of dollars worth of fireworks were a feature of the river festival held in Rock Island last night.

1934 -- 75 years ago: Five thousand people attended the celebration of July Fourth at Longview Park in Rock Island.

1959 -- 50 years ago: A battle for survival is under way in the Quad-Cities area, according to Clark Hartzell, superintendent of streets in Moline. Hartzell said on one side of the battle line are all Quad-Cities residents, city officials and the best equipment and chemicals progressive science can supply. On the other side is an opponent that is giving ground rapidly, the brownish and black beetle that carries with it a fungus that causes an incurable illness in the Dutch elm trees. Part of Moline already has been scouted, and many likely looking cases were found.

1984 -- 25 years ago:The sidewalks for the parade in East Moline were filled with happy, chatting people all along the route. The parade drew a record 131 entries and crowds estimated at 40,000. Overcast skies and temperatures in only the mid-80s helped keep the spectators comfortable.
