Did you miss last week's call for entries for the Quad-Cities Holiday Food Guide? Not to worry -- you still have over a week to send in your recipes!
The Holiday Food Guide 2000, published by The Dispatch, The Rock Island Argus and The Leader, will be distributed by the newspapers in November in print and online. The deadline for submitting recipes is Sept. 22.
In addition to featuring recipes sent in by readers, the 32nd edition of the Holiday Food Guide will include recipes from six Quad-Cities area professional chefs.
True to tradition, prizes will be awarded in conjunction with this year's food guide. Local cooks will have a chance to win one of six $100 gift certificates to be redeemed at businesses advertised in the food guide. Winners, to be selected in a random drawing, will have their choice among many advertisers featured in the food guide.
In addition, four ``early-bird'' gift certificates of $25 each will be given to winners chosen in a random drawing from the names of those who send in their recipes before Friday. These winners also may redeem their certificates at area businesses advertised in the book.
The Quad-Cities Holiday Food Guide 2000 will feature six recipe categories:
1. Appetizers and Snacks
2. Soups and Salads
4. Side Dishes
5. Breads and Rolls
6. Holiday Sweets
Here are the rules:
Send recipes along with the entry coupon you'll find on page B1 of today's Dispatch and Rock Island Argus and page C1 of The Leader, giving your name, address and telephone numbers at home and at work. Coupons will be used for random drawings for gift certificates.
Each recipe must be submitted on a sheet of 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper. Do not send small recipe cards. They easily can be misplaced in the large number of recipes we receive.
On each recipe, print, type or write clearly your name, address and both home and work telephone numbers. Give your recipe a title.
List ALL ingredients in exact quantities and in order of use. Do not use abbreviations.
List exact sizes of cans, bottles, jars and packages. Do not use general descriptions such as large, small, regular, tall or flat, which do not describe a specific size.
Specify exact sizes of baking pans, saucepans, skillets, Dutch ovens and casseroles. Note whether or not they should be covered or uncovered. Indicate if baking pans, cookies sheets or jelly-roll pans are to be greased, ungreased or greased/floured.
After the ingredient list, give complete directions for cooking or baking, accounting for every ingredient on the list and giving the cooking/baking time and temperature.
Each contributor is responsible for the accuracy of his or her recipes. Please proofread and double-check your recipes before submitting them. Incomplete, unclear or illegible recipes will not be considered for publication or prizes.
Mail your recipes/coupons to: Quad-Cities Holiday Food Guide 2000, c/o The The Rock Island Argus, 1724 4th Ave., Rock Island, IL 61201. Participants also may submit their recipes by e-mailing them to email@example.com. Include your name, address and telephone numbers in your e-mail submissions. Recipes also may be delivered to any of the newspapers' offices.
Remember: Early-bird deadline is Friday; final deadline is Sept. 22.
