MIDWEST WRITING CENTER EXTENDS DEADLINE OF 40TH ANNUAL MISSISSIPPI VALLEY POETRY CONTEST TO MAY 15th

The Midwest Writing Center, located at the Bucktown Center for Arts in downtown Davenport, recently kicked off its 40th Mississippi Valley Poetry Contest. The first competition was held in 1972; since then, it has become a premier contest in the United States. The contest, which awards cash prizes, is funded by donations, grants, and entry fees. It is administered by volunteer poets, writers, and artists.

Submissions to the contest will be accepted until May 15th. First, Second, Third, Honorable Mention, and twenty-five finalist poems will be chosen in Regional (residents of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin)and National (United States residents) categories. Winning poems will be published in the Off Channel anthology and contributors will be invited to attend a launch party and reading for the public when it's released in the fall of 2013.

This year's contest judges are Laura Madeline Wiseman for the Regional Contest and Lisa Zimmerman for the National Contest. Laura, a teacher of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is the author of seven poetry collections. Lisa's poetry has appeared in several magazines and journals and has been nominated three times for the Pushcart Prize. For the special Upper Mississippi River Valley-themed contest, the judge will be well-known poet and former Quad City Poet Laureate Richard Stahl.

Guidelines for submissions to the 40th annual Mississippi Valley Poetry Contest are available online at http://www.midwestwritingcenter.org/RedesignedSite/Events/MVPC.htm. Questions can be directed to Ryan Collins, Executive Director of Midwest Writing Center, by calling 563-324-1410 or emailing mwc@midwestwritingcenter.org.
