Rock Island family's roots run deep on Arsenal

Mike Davis' great-great-grandfather, William Channon, was the Rock Island Arsenal's first civilian employee. Channon helped to build both Quarters One and the Clock Tower. William Channon's descendants followed in his footsteps, and today Mr. Davis, a retired fifth-generation Arsenal employee, is a private contractor on the island.

The hotel's executive management team staff competed against each other with house keeping staff judging and coaching. Hall's Shoes Closes

Janice and Jerry Hall are closing Hall's Shoes in Aledo after minding the store for part of its 120 year history. The store has been run by the same family since 1892 and believed to be the only shoe store in Illinois that has done so for that length of time. Mr. Hall has been in the family business for over 50 years.

Rock Island's Refugee Community

In January 2012 Patrick Traylor, a Rock Island native and former Dispatch/Argus photo intern, spent a week with the city's growing refugee population. For his master's project at Ohio University Mr. Traylor shared in the lives of the families who live in the Century Woods apartment complex and examined their integration into the Quad-City community.

2nd Lt. Dwight Ekstam's family is visited by the Marine Corps' POW/MIA affairs branch who helped identify 2nd Lt. Ekstam's remains 68 years after he died in a plane crash during WWII. The investigators visited the home of Bruce Peterson in Port Byron on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, to detail the recovery of 2nd Lt. Ekstam's remains and begin arrangements for his military funeral.

Fire damages two-story East Moline home

East Moline firefighters gather outside a two-story home at 721 17th Ave., in East Moline, just before 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012. Firefighters had to cut through the roof and one exterior wall to get to the flames. Captain Gary Robertson said the the cause of the fire is still under investigation. He said no one was in the building and the fire department was till seeking out its owners. A motorist on 17th Avenue noticed smoke coming out of the building and called 911.

Deer stranded on Lock & Dam 15 roller A female deer caught the attention of the Quad Cities Friday after a passerby noticed the stranded on one of the Lock & Dam 15 rollers. No rescue was attempted due to the extreme risk to human life. The deer was euthanized around 4:45 pm.

1987 -- 25 years ago: Thirty-one Moline High School student bakers showed up for class Thursday with flour, pie-filling and measuring cups in hand as hopeful entrants in the school's Tenth Annual Pie Baking Contest. The student bakers, mostly from foods and nutrition and independent living classes, sweated over a hot baking oven on an unusually humid morning.
