SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A century-old landmark in eastern Illinois appears to be headed for demolition.

According to WAND-TV in Decatur, the City Council in Shelbyville voted this week to tear down the Shelbyville Chautauqua.

The circular auditorium sits in Forest Park in the small town and was built in 1903. Shelbyville is about 35 miles south of Decatur.

Chautauqua was a national movement that brought speakers and cultural events to towns across the country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Locals say Shelbyville's arena was once the center of community entertainment.

But the building is now in rough shape and needs an estimated $1.7 million of work.

Local resident Wayne Gray still hopes to save the structure. He says about $100,000 has been raised.
