Press release submitted by Amanda Maurer
With flu activity going strong across the United States, Home Bound Healthcare would like to urge everyone that has not yet had the flu shot to get vaccinated right away.
The effects of widespread flu activity are alarming and apparent: eight Chicago area hospitals recently had to turn away ambulances due to the surge of patients with flu-like symptoms; the state of New York has declared a public health emergency and is now allowing pharmacists to vaccinate children as young as six months old; hospitals are imposing restrictions on visitors due to widespread flu activity.
The best way to protect yourself from the flu and its effects is to get your flu shot if you have not already done so for the 2012-2013 season.
Those who are most at risk of developing serious flu-related complications include people 65 years and older, pregnant women, and those with certain medical conditions including asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease. If you live with or care for someone who is high risk for developing flu-related complications it is very important for you to be vaccinated as well.
CBS News reported this week that 135 million flu vaccines were manufactured for the 2012-2013 flu season and 128 million have been administered so far. Those interested in getting vaccinated should do so as soon as possible.
