MOLINE -- Free leaf collection services begin Monday, Oct. 15, in Moline.

Stickers will not be required on yard-waste bags through Dec. 14. Bags should be placed at least 3 feet from the garbage cart on scheduled garbage collection days.

Moline encourages residents to bag leaves during the sticker-free period rather than wait for the leaf vacuum. The city said leaf vacuuming is intended to aid in leaf disposal during the peak season and should not be the primary means of disposal.

Leaf vacuuming also begins Oct. 15 and runs through Nov. 30, weather permitting.

The city is divided into three areas, and two vacuuming crews will work in each area weekdays, moving from north to south. Beginning Oct. 15, residents can call (309) 524.2407 to hear a pre-recorded message of the vacuum locations or go to moline.il.us for a map.

Leaves should be raked close to, but not on, the road. The city requests that no rocks, sticks or other debris be in the leaf pile. Vehicles should not be parked in front of leaf piles because it makes vacuuming difficult and heat from car engines can ignite the leaves.

Rich Westmoreland, Moline's municipal services operation manager, asks residents to be patient when scheduled pickups change because of bad weather or volume. Crews will begin working where they ended the previous day.

Moline prohibits burning leaves, tree branches and grass clippings.

People can view a short video on leaf disposal options, including mulching and composting, daily on Mediacom Channel 18 at 1, 6 and 9 a.m., noon, and 3, 7 and 11 p.m.
