SILVIS -- Silvis Ald. Stan Purvis, 4th Ward, died Thursday morning at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus in Rock Island after a bout with cancer. He was 57.
The flag flew at half-staff in front of Silvis City Hall Thursday to honor Ald. Purvis, a well-respected individual. For Mayor Lyle Lohse, he was a fighter that did not let a disease stop his duties to Silvis.
``They thought he was going to go earlier this week,'' said Mayor Lyle Lohse, a close friend of Ald. Purvis. ``Stan really fought this thing.''
Elected to office in 1995, Ald. Purvis was active on various committees during the 1970s, Mayor Lohse said. Despite being weakened by the disease, Ald. Purvis missed only a few council meetings before his death.
``He doesn't have to suffer no more,'' City Clerk Barbara Fox said. ``He's in a better place.''
As chairman for the city's finance committee, Ald. Purvis was instrumental in balancing the budget -- gaining respect from the council because of his financial knowledge.
``He did much more running finances for the city than citizens know,'' said Ald. Gene Leibovitz, 3rd Ward, and finance committee member. ``I think Stan was the most intelligent person we had.''
Ald. Paul King, 3rd Ward, remembered Ald. Purvis as being dedicated to Silvis. He said Ald. Purvis was always willing to assist him with various committees.
``Stan was one of the stalwarts,'' said Ald. Bob Zesiger, 4th Ward. ``Stan had a handle on city finances. I will be lost without his guidance on finances.''
As for replacing Ald. Purvis' seat, Mayor Lohse said he has not considered it yet. The mayor has the authority to appoint a person before the term ends in May 1999. However, that appointment will not happen anytime soon.
``We're missing Stan,'' Mayor Lohse said. ``We're not thinking of replacing him.''
Ald. Purvis' funeral arrangements are pending at Schroder Mortuary, 701 1st Ave., Silvis. Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
