VBS lands at Port Byron's Bethel Baptist

PORT BYRON -- Bethel Baptist Church,27308 108th Ave N., will hold a vacation Bible school from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19.

It will featureBible lessons, songs, games, memory verses, activities and a 5:30 p.m. supper.

Free healings share a Satva light

ROCK ISLAND -- The Satva Center, 709 19th St., will offer free personal healings from 3 to 5 p.m. today, Saturday, July 6.

This "Day of Light" event will be led by members of the Chicago Sukyo Mahikari Center, a nonprofit organization of individuals that practice the "Art of Giving Light."

Attend a presentation at 3 p.m., receive light at 4 p.m., followed by a 4:30 p.m. class to learn how to purify mind and body, offer the gift of light to others in love and service and practice integrating spiritual principles and values in daily life.

The next Sukyo Mahikari Course for Spiritual Development will be July 26-28.

Quad-Cities native ordained in Kansas

Native Quad-Citian, Beth A. Sonneville celebrated her ordination into the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Saturday, May 18, in Lenexa, Kansas.

The Rev. Sonneville is a member and associate pastor at Shawnee Park Christian Church in Lenexa, where the celebration was held.

Her parents, Tina (Guzzo) and Donald Sonneville, were present for the celebration.

Rev. Sonneville is a graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic School in Moline and Alleman High School in Rock Island.

She is a food scientist whose passion is food justice. She also serves as a chaplain at a 32-bed hospice facility in Kansas City, Mo.

Savory select meals make a smart choice

A "Smart Choice Food Program" has added a box of "Savory Select Meals" to its offerings. The new box contains seven "heat-and-serve diabetic-friendly meals" and costs $24.

Contents will include:

-- Pineapple ham steak with sweetpotato patties and peas

-- Baked lemon pepper fish over rice with vegetable medley

-- Country fried steak with gravy, potato wedgesand green beans

-- Meatloaf with gravy, mashed potatoes and carrots

-- Baked chicken with herb dressing, gravy, broccoli and cauliflower

-- Roast turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables

-- Southwestern omelet with cubed potatoesand stewed tomatoes.

Smart Choice offers a basic "Smart Box" costing $36 and other "specialty" boxes such as this new one.

Block party connects kids to school supplies

BETTENDORF -- Connection Church will hold a block party at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at 4374 State St.

Freefood, entertainment and a backpack and school supply giveaway will be featured.

Two inflatable bouncers, a dunk tank, biketune-ups and raffle prizes also will be available.

Free food will include sandwiches,chips, popcorn and freezer pops.

The block party is in its third year. Fortychildren gotbackpacks and school supplies in 2011. The number rose to 150 last year. This year's goal is to help200 children.

Life Line screenings offered at Faith

MOLINE -- Faith Lutheran Church, 1611 41st St., will host a Life Line Screening on Friday, July 19.

The screening will help identify peoples' risks of stroke, vascular disease and osteoporosis.

Screenings will include carotid artery;abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound; peripheral arterial disease -- PAD;osteoporosis; atrial fibrillation.

Pre-register by calling 800-324-9458 to make an appointment.

Life Line Screening was established in 1993 and has since become the nation's leading provider of community-based vascular screenings.
