Helen Elizabeth Martin, 93, of Wilton, Iowa, died on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, Iowa.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 9 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Wilton. Burial will be held on Monday, March 4, at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island.

Helen was born Nov. 16, 1919, in Cedar County, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Stella Nauman Woodhouse.

Helen graduated from Wilton High School in 1937. She later graduated from Brown Business College in Davenport. She married Earl L. Martin, Oct. 21, 1939. He preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 1978.

Helen and Earl worked at the Rock Island Arsenal and Defense Logistics Service in Battle Creek, Mich. Upon their retirement in 1973, they returned to their farm in Cedar County to raise Black Angus cattle and grow corn and soybeans. She was an active member of the Wilton Presbyterian Church. Playing cards was her hobby. She enjoyed baking chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. Her life centered around her family.

She is survived by her son, Jim, and his wife, Pat, Federal Way, Wash.; three grandchildren, Bruce and his wife, Nicole Martin, Parker, Colo., Laura and her husband, Charles Elliott, Phoenixville, Pa., and Lisa and her husband, Georges, Brooklyn, N.Y.; as well as six great-grandchildren, Elin and Andrew Martin, John Elliott and Samuel, and Olivia and Sloane Scrivens.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, Steven; sisters, Lois Woodhouse, Catherine Thede and Margaret Clausen; and brother, Harold Woodhouse.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in her name to Overbrook School for the Blind, 6333 Malvern Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19151-2597.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Simpson Memorial Home, Leland R. Smith Assisted Living and Iowa City Hospice for their dedication and care.
