  Today is Saturday, May 17, the 138th day of 2008. There are 228 days left in the year. 1858 -- 150 years ago: Warren's Store receives daily the New York papers fresh from the press. We are indebted to him for news in advance of the mail. 1883 -- 125 years ago: River traffic is on the up-grade with three steamers now harbored in Rock Island. 1908 -- 100 years ago: Miss Myrtle E. Dade of Rock Island was elected supreme recorder of the Royal Neighbors of America at a convention held in Chicago. The delegates also voted to remove the head office from Peoria to Rock Island. 1933 -- 75 years ago: An invitation to the Woodmen of the World of Illinois to hold the 1935 state convention in Rock Island will be presented to the 1933 convention opening tomorrow at the Morrison Hotel in Chicago. 1958 -- 50 years ago: Writers in East Moline were honored at an annual literary dinner that was held last night in United Township High School with 13 pupils honored for their works and 13 given honorable mention. First prize honors went to Byrl Weiss, short story; Vivian McMullin, essay; JoAnne Scott and Marie Mitton, poetry; and Bonnie Wilkins, other prose. 1983 -- 25 years ago: The Metropolitan Airport Authority board accepted Central Engineering Co.'s bid for construction of the air carrier apron at the new Quad-City Airport Terminal. The Davenport firm submitted a base bid of $1.38 million.
