DRIVERS LICENSE INFO
Both Iowa and Illinois require new residents to take written drivers' tests, vision tests and, in most cases, behind-the-wheel driving tests. Fees vary depending on the classification of license being sought.
New Illinois residents have 30 days to obtain their new driver's licenses and 90 days to change their license-plate registration. Downstate driver's-license stations are open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 8 a.m.-noon Saturdays.
New Iowa residents with a valid out-of-state license must obtain an Iowa license within 30 days of establishing residency. The driver's-license station for Scott County is at 2162 W. Kimberly Road, Davenport, 386-1050. The office is open 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays, and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays.
Both Iowa and Illinois require the use of seat belts for all drivers and for front-seat passengers 6 and older. In Iowa, children under 3 must be fastened in an approved car seat. Children between 3 and 6 must be secured in either a car seat or seat belt. In Illinois, children under age 6 must be secured in a car seat or restraint within the vehicle.
Illinois and Iowa require that all vehicles have liability insurance and that insurance information be carried in the vehicle. |
