Makes 4 dozen 3-inch cookies. These were always a special birthday treat when we were growing up.

Ingredients

3/4 cup soft shortening (part butter)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2-1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Mix thoroughly shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Sift together and stir in dry ingredients. Chill at least 1 hour. Roll out 1/8-inch thick. Cut into shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes.
