Holiday Date-Nut bread

1 cup chopped dates
1 cup hot water
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon margarine
1 egg
1-1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup chopped walnuts
1/4 teaspoon salt

Mix dates and hot water. Let sit until cool. Cream sugar, margarine and egg. Add date mixture. Add dry ingredients and nuts and mix well. Bake in greased and floured loaf pan or small loaf pans. Fill pan(s)1/2 full. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes or until tooth pick comes out clean.
