Prep girls' basketball

West Central 62, Wethersfield 57: A 20-point night by senior guard Sarah Hansen couldn't help Wethersfield (5-3) stem the tide in its Lincoln Trail Conference opener at Kewanee, as West Central used a 12-2 second-period run to go up by six at halftime and extended that lead to 48-38 entering the fourth quarter.

Annawan 75, Princeville 35: Celina VanHyfte (30 points), Megan Foes (15) Paige Randall (12) and Morgan VanHyfte (12) reached the double-figure mark as the Annawan Bravettes rolled down to Princeville and rolled to the victory in their Lincoln Trail Conference opener. The win keeps Annawan perfect overall at 6-0.

Galva 54, Mercer County 40: Galva's Alex Storm had a red-hot first half, scoring 13 of her game-high 18 points to stake the Lady Cats to a 22-19 halftime lead over Mercer County, but it was the combined efforts of Donel Samuel, Devon Peterson and Curran O'Riley in the third quarter that enabled the hosts to pull away from their Lincoln Trail Conference rivals. The trio combined for 15 third-period points to give Galva a 42-31 advantage and offset a 14-point night by the Golden Eagles' Kristin Heath.

Stark County 53, United 36: Stark County's Ashley Phillips drained four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 14 points, with teammate Madisyn Paxson adding 12 as the Rebels (4-2) opened Lincoln Trail Conference play by besting United at Wyoming. Phillips hit all four of her treys in the first quarter to stake the hosts to a 24-9 lead. Sydney Toops and Andi Hendrix each had 10 points for the Red Storm.

Q-C college women's basketball

Dubuque 69, Augustana 58: A strong performance by Augustana's Molly Etheridge wasn't quite enough to prevent Augustana from suffering its first loss in five games as Dubuque (2-3) shot 50 percent in the second half to pull away to the nonconference win at the Carver Center. Etheridge tallied 18 points, six rebounds and four steals to pace the hosts, with teammate Maddie Kerr adding 10 points.

Q-C college men's basketball

Monmouth 65, Illinois College 63: Former Riverdale standout and Monmouth freshman Wes DeClercq chipped in seven points as the Fighting Scots (1-2) held off Illinois College at Glennie Gymnasium in both teams' Midwest Conference opener.

SAU's Kraciun, Lynn earn academic honors: A pair of St. Ambrose soccer standouts were recognized for their skills in the classroom. On the men's side, senior and ex-Bettendorf prep Matt Kraciun earned first team Capital One Academic All-America honors, with sophomore Morgan Lynn from the women's team earning third-team kudos.

Kraciun earned first team All-Midwest Collegiate Conference honors as the Fighting Bees finished 10-6-2. His 11 goals were tied for a team high, while his eight assists were an MCC best. Lynn, the Queen Bees' goalkeeper, compiled an 8-3 record with four shutouts and an .873 save percentage.
